About Me

Welcome to virtualviking.io!

(Not to be confused with virtualviking.net – Sorry Pontus, by the time I realised it was too late to change it so oh well, we can be viking buddies together!)

This site will be dedicated to mostly technical topics surrounding my areas of focus at VMware. I’m hoping it will turn out to be a useful resource!

Bio – Éamon Ryan, Solutions Architect @ VMware:

Born and raised in Ireland, I started out working at VMware for a 6 month internship when I was still in college back in 2009. Once that was concluded, I completed my final year of college achieving a Bachelor’s of Science (Honours) in Software Development from Cork Institute of Technology.

I finished college on a Friday and was back at VMware the following Monday! I started out in the Global Support Services organisation where I worked for 3 years supporting all manner and size of customers, building up to the Premier Services team supporting some of the largest ones and working on all sorts of areas surrounding vSphere.

In mid 2013 I transitioned into a Solutions Architect role within the Livefire Solutions team which today is part of VMware’s Technical Services Center of Excellence within Global Field & Partner Readiness.

In late 2014 I moved out of Cork, Ireland straight over to San Francisco, California which has been quite a change!

Today, I spend my time working with the vRealize Suite (focusing on the Automation aspects), Cloud Native Apps and Pivotal Cloud Foundry. I assist on customer/partner engagements surrounding my areas of focus and use the knowledge gained to help build out solution-focused and integration-focused (rather than solely product-focused) material to help enable our Field Systems Engineers, Professional Services Consultants, Architects and Partners to do their very best.

The role involves quite a bit of travel – at least 100,000 miles a year each year so far – hence the “travel” part of the tagline of this website!

Having the perspective of different groups from different geographies and gathering feedback from all of them on our products helps immensely both for improving the Livefire program I work on and also the CTO Ambassador program which I have been a member of since the beginning of 2015.

Outside of work, I am an avid PC gamer!
